Cast Decisions

We have asked one of our friends to star in our video as the main female/“The girlfriend”. We wanted to use a person who was around the same age as the girl in the real band so that when our actress lip-syncs; the visuals fit the voice in a roundabout way.

Also we referred back to our audience research and saw that our target audience is mainly girls who are aged 15 to 17 years old. We have chosen a song and video theme, which is in a way quite biased and in favour of female opinion.
Also the girl we have asked already has a full A-Level in
Theatre Studies and has a lot of acting experience and she too is a Media Studies student so we know that she will take our direction well.

We decided that “The Girlfriend” and the male actor we will chose to play the “boyfriend” in our music video have to be comfortable with each other so we chose a friend of our main female to play the “boyfriend”.

Similarly, with the girls we have asked to play girlfriend’s friends, we wanted the actors to appear natural and comfortable together and so we are using friends of the actress who is playing girlfriend.

Interview with a Fan

Question 1: How long have you listened to Snakes Hate Fire?

I have listened to Snakes Hate Fire for three years now because their songs are really funky and I enjoy listening to them as I travel to work.

Question 2: What is your favourite song of Snakes Hate Fire and why?

My favourite song is ‘Innocent’ because the storyline of the song is about a person lying and cheating on their partner and this also happened to me around about the time that the song was released it helped me decide to go it alone and I have become a stronger person because of the song.

Question 3: What type of genre is the music?

The genre of the band Snakes Hate Fire is glam rock pop. I think they are quite similar in some ways to the band No Doubt – the band Gwen Stefani was in before she went solo. They both have female vocalist with powerful voices and the rest of the band are men.

Question 4: Have you ever seen the band live in concert and where?

I have seen the band live in concert twice now once a headline show at The Tavern in Wigan and also when they were the support act for popular band The Mission District at the Roadhouse in Manchester. They are great live performers and I am always checking their Myspace page for tour news and looking forward to the next time they are playing live.

Question 5: Do you feel that you can relate to their lyrics and why?

I believe I can relate to their songs within the lyrics because with the song ‘Innocent’ I was going through the same thing that the song is about and it helped to cheer me up alot more when I was down and depressed after my boyfriend cheated on me just like what happened to whoever wrote the song in the band.

Notes on the Band / Artist

Band Name: Snakes Hate Fire

The band is made up of 5 musicians from Manchester (Grace Tither on vocals, piano and guitar, Adam Bradbury on guitar and vocals, Phil Rigby on guitar and vocals, Tom Booth on bass and Mark Tither on drums), together, they create catchy pop-rock style music. The band was created initially as a backing group for Grace, but after working together so well they decided to try to make it as a band together. The first EP, titled 'Everything' was recorded in October 2008, and all the songs on it were written by the band.
Considering the short space of time they have been together (since March 2008), they have had great success and have sold out venues including Manchester Academy and Liverpool Barfly, on top of this; major record lables have shown a keen interest in them this year.

music video of N - Dubz "I Need You"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nxq-wCf5G8o

Aspects of Performance:

The band are always in all of their videos relating todays technology and issues in their lyrics.

Narrative:

The narrative is linear because it tell a story of how they met someone at a club and couldn't get hold of them the next day.

How the video effects or produces a larger image for the Star/ Artist/ Band:

The band show their musical talents and the fact that they have money by the amount of bling they have around they necks and wrists.

How the visual relates to the stars:
The visual shows the artists as rich and talented so show off how much they've got.

Mise-en-scene:

the costume at night all the acts are in black or grey with shnny objecs around their necks and wrists, they all arive in different forms of transport(a helicopter, a motorbike and a lambourgini car), when they go into the club they are all dressed in red and white with the male characters wearing big black sun glasses and wearing their trade mark materials (hats, chains, earings).
one of the male characters uses up to date lyrics by talking about facebook a communication device on the internet. they use lyrics like neddle in a hay stack and some others to show their writing talents. when they meet the opposite sex they want to talk to they enter a room of privacy and their fantasies of richs and pleasure. the shots makes them cut to outside with their modes of transport all showing, then when they all get together for the chorus they are all sat on a lightened up seat in the club showing their importance, the second male character goes inot his room of pleasure and riches and its full of tvs and fish bowles and posters. all the rooms had a red look in them to show the heat of the moment meeting someone for the first time and showing the heat of the moment. at the end of the video the artisits show off all their belonging such as cars bling and eyes which most arists wearing sunglasses don't show as much.

Use of camera:

Mid-shots, full shots, 2 shots, zooms in and out, tilts, wipe, close ups, extreme close ups , low angle and high angle shots and panning shot, also using the track .

Special Effects:

There wern't any used.

Genre:

Pop, Rap, Hip Hop and Dance.

Audience:

The target audience would be teenagers around 13 - early 20's

Music Channel:

MTV, Viva, The Hits, TMF, The Starz.

Editing:

The songs starts with the helicopter car and bike shown in different ways, the shots cut from the three different stars and they are full body shots. with close ups of the face on the stars when they start to sing, theres a whipe across the screen to show what they did the night before and show the face expressions of the people they like and shows the order the song is goin to go in with the way they look at the singers, it goes mid shot full body then back to close up to show the intestity of the moment, and does a slow motion walk as they are let down, also shows a point of view shot of the first character on facebook, the character all gather round the camera at different heights to show all their faces in the sceen, when the female character starts singing there are 7 cuts of different settings with the close up of her face the visual relates to the lyrics with the "Bang bang shoes" and the "looking so confused" face expression. and when the chorus starts the shots differ between close ups, full shots, low angles, high angles, three shots with zoom ins and zoom outs when the second male singer starts singing his solo there is a two mid shot, with close ups to show his lip syncing when he has a girl in his section with most of the shot looking up at him with low angles and when the girl leaves as he comes back he is in slow motion as he looks for her and a mid shot of him swinging his arm in frustration as he loses her. As the song comes to an end the cameras angles show the artists as only human but still pretty important with a tilt shot of the artists to show of their bodies in the way they want to see them potrayed on television, the music video finishes with a shot showing all the artists and finishes with a tilt and a shot of the sun rise to show another day is going to happen so forget about the past.

Represenation:

It shows the stars as gangsters but they still have feeling and want to meet the right person for them.

Planning Materials for Video

Female costume designs:

We wanted the actress playing “Girlfriend” in our video to be feminine so we choose a costume which, included typically feminine materials such as Lace and Knitwear. In a light pink and brown/grey.However, we wanted to show that she is going to stand up for herself so we also chose a leather shoe with small gold studs.

And have also included elements of black. We also wanted the clothes to be casual everyday wear but the ruffles on the tunic will help her to stand out from the crowd. This is important for us because when we referred back to our audience research we could see that we had decided that our “artist” should appear dressed in-between Normal and Extravagant in our music video.

We Have Band - You Came Out (Official Music Video)

The aspects of perfromance:

The characters in the video all have the same face expression because the face is replicated and shown as a mirror image on all the faces, shows stop motion at its best.

Narrative:

The song is non-linear because it makes no sense and doesnt really have a clear beginning in a story or a story at all so its a freeform video.

How the video effects or produces a large image for the star/artist/Band:

The people at the beginning show their importance in the music video and will show that they are going to be main characters in the music video.

How the visual relate to the stars:

It shows the artist has a wild imagination and wanted to make the video stand out in the world of today with all different kinds of music video.

Mise-en-scene:

You dont see their clothes but their faces show lots of different colours and there is lip sayncing witht the stop motion showing mouths moving and mouthing the words.

Use of camera:

The camera stays still and the actors/actresses move instead

Special efffects:

The special effects are paint rolling down they faves and the eyes moving on the eye lids also they made their eyes go onto the hands e.g. just like in pan's labyrinth.

Genre:

The genre is dance pop.

Audience:

The audience to the music video would be young ravers such as 13-25 ish.

Music Channel:

MTV, Viva, Smash Hits

Editing:

The editing is cut between close ups of the whole face and extreme close ups of the mouth area where the lip syncing is happening to the beat of the song.

Audience:

The target audience will be from the ages of 13-25 because of its dance beat and the lyrics can sing along too.

Representation:

The band don't appear in the music video.

RESULTS

Our results show that our researched demographic is strongly female. This tells us that if we wish to use our results in order to plan our own music video we must take into account that the majority of our results will reflect a female viewpoint, our results are bias towards women.

The majority of people who filled out our questionnaire were between the ages of 15 and 18. Secondary to this was 18 to 24 year olds. These results show us that our video will mainly appeal to that age range, as his opinions are based on theres.

The most preferred genre is Indie music, secondary to this is Rock, then Pop, then R&B.
This tells us that, for out music video we should pick one of these genres, as this is the most appealing.

According to our research, the most popular music channels are MTV, TMF and 4Music.
In order to utilize this research in our project, we should put our music video on this channel so as to reach our audience.

In these results it is clear to see that the preference lies clearly with a mixture of both narrative and performance. However, if you do not include the green section of the pie chart you can see that narrative is more popular with 31% of the entire result over the 19% who preferred performance.
This shows us that although we should have a mixture of both, there should be more narrative than performance.

In a music video our results show that a linear structure is preferred. We believe that this is because "flashbacks" in a music video, being shown in such a small time frame, can often get lost in translation. These results tell us that our music video should probably have a linear structure.

These results are very close but our results state that our target audience prefer the artist/actors to appear extravagant.
However, as the margins between our results are so tight we believe that in our music video we should have the artists/actors appearing in-between extravagant and normal.

From these results we can see that our audience prefer a music video to have direct address. However, the margins are again very close and so we feel that our music video may benefit from including a mixture of direct and indirect address.

From our results we are able to see that our audience prefers to sometimes have special effects or to definitely have them. We plan to take this into account when we make our music video.

It is clear that our audience prefers a simple plot in a music video with 72% of the vote. We believe that this is again because there is only a short amount of time in which you are able to tell a story and a complex plot can make thing not only difficult for the creators but for the viewer aswell.

Our demographic strongly believes that the artist/band should star in their own video. However, the people who filled out our questionnaires were thinking about the music videos of famous bands and artists when choosing their answers. And getting the real artist to appear in our music video may be difficult to achieve. Yet, we our optimistic about using actors and/or other methods in order to keep our audience happy.

The preferred settings are at a gig/on stage, on the move and at a club. We believe that it will be sensible for us to consider all possible settings and take each opportunity we are given. However, when finding locations we still plan to take our results into account.

It is obvious from these results that most people these days do not like dance routines in music videos. We believe that this result correlates with the result of the preferred genre as most people like Indie and Rock.
However, a strong 25% said yes and the other 25% said they sometimes like choreography. This also is shown in the genre results as Pop music and R&B are also clear favourites.

These results show me that the majority of people we questioned like music videos to be creative. Absolutely no people said that they definitely do not like videos to be creative. We believe that from these results we should take that our music video needs to be as creative as possible.

Most people prefer a music video to be fast-paced. We will take this into account when we are writing a storyboard and treatment and also in post-production editing.

From these results we can see that our audience prefer a mixture of both studio filming and naturally lit outside footage.

A large amount of the people we questioned think that music videos should make use of props. This may suggest that we could perhaps dissect our chosen song until we find an idea for a prop in order to base our video around it.

From these results we can see that people still often prefer to watch music videos on the television. This result tells me that we should be taking inspiration from the kinds of videos shown on TV at the moment. We will cross reference this result with the preferred music channel results.

From these results we can see that the most important factors to consider in order to attract our audience to watch our video are Actor/Artist performance.

From these results we can see that most people prefer a music video to be 4 minutes long. Not too short and not too long.

The majority of people which we questioned watched music videos often or occasionally. This is good as it means that our target audience are likely to see our video once we broadcast it.
